What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers in Coopers Plains can be made from either porcelain or composite material and are designed to cover the front surface of a tooth to mask any imperfections. They’re bonded firmly to the teeth and are used in cosmetic dentistry to improve the shape, colour or size of teeth.

Veneers might be the ideal solution for you if your teeth are:

  • chipped or broken
  • stained and discoloured
  • worn down from tooth grinding
  • irregularly shaped or misaligned

Types of Dental Veneers

When it comes to cosmetic dentistry, there are two types of veneers that can be used at our CP Dental clinic.

Porcelain Veneers

provide natural looking teeth. Our dentist uses experienced technicians at a dental laboratory who craft these restorations for our Brisbane patients to the finest detail. Usually, porcelain veneers in Mater Hill will be fitted in just two visits to our dental practice. The downside is that in order to ensure a proper fit, some preparation for your natural teeth will be required where your dentist will need to remove a tiny amount of enamel.

A small amount of your tooth is typically required to be trimmed away to ensure a long lasting and aesthetic result.

Composite Veneers

are bonded directly to your teeth in just one visit – so you’ll leave our South Brisbane practice with a brand new smile. They are made from layers of resin that are bonded to the tooth surface and carefully shaped to look and function beautifully.

Porcelain or Composite?

There are advantages and disadvantages to both types. For example, porcelain veneers look very natural and life-like and they’re also very durable. On the other hand, they need to be custom made off-site and can take a few weeks to be crafted and if they chip or crack, the whole veneer may need to be replaced.

With resin veneers, any cracks or chips can easily be repaired in one dental visit. They’re much less expensive and unlike porcelain they may not need any trimming of your natural teeth. They are not typically as durable and can stain more easily.

What does the process involve?

At your first consultation, our dentist will discuss your goals with you to help us determine the look that you would like to achieve. Your teeth and gums will be examined, and we may take X rays and a 3d Scan along with a series of photos in order to design your ideal results. Your dentist will also discuss in detail what’s involved in the procedure and answer any questions that you have.

If you decide to go ahead with treatment, your dentist will need to prepare your teeth to ensure the perfect fit by removing a small amount of tooth enamel. In some cases little or no natural tooth is required to be removed. An impression or scan your mouth will be taken which is sent off to our dental technician partners  where your veneer will be custom made. This usually takes around 10-14 days.

The next appointment will be to fit your new porcelain veneers. Your cosmetic dentist will make sure they perfectly match your surrounding teeth and once you’re happy with the appearance, we’ll go ahead and securely bond them to your teeth, check your bite, and make any final adjustments.

How long does a dental veneer last?

Veneers that are made from porcelain will maintain their shape and appearance for many years, as it’s a wear-resistant, hard, non-porous material. That said, it’s important to bear in mind that while veneers are quite durable, they can chip if hit by hard objects. With regular dental visits and a good oral care routine, Brisbane patients can expect their veneers to last between 7-15 years.

It’s important to understand that porcelain veneers aren’t a maintenance-free, permanent solution. It’s an irreversible procedure and your veneers will need replacing at some point in the future. To make sure that it’s the right treatment for you, our dentist will assess your teeth and gums and discuss your options with you at our dental clinic in South Brisbane.
